This past Sunday marked the North American release of Nintendo's newest video game console, and it's proving to be one of the hottest must-have items of the holiday season.

Sales and pre-orders have already shown that the Wii U (the successor to the Wii) is a hit with fans of the Nintendo franchise, but the system's newest features could attract Xbox and PlayStation loyalists as well. In addition to the same motion-activated capabilities as its precursor, the Wii U delivers high definition graphics and comes packaged with a tablet-like, touch-screen controller — two features aimed at the hardcore gamers who generally eschew Nintendo's kid-friendlier titles for "Call of Duty" or "Halo."
