In the movie business, it takes money to make money — but how much money is anybody's guess. Luckily, Forbes magazine recently compiled a list of the most bankable stars in Hollywood, assessing each actor's "return on investment."

To determine each actor's bankability, Forbes used financial data from the last three films in which he/she played a starring role, including box office earnings and salaries.* The analysts were then able to find the average earnings of each movie compared to each dollar the star took home.

For every dollar Portman gets paid, the movie studios see a return of $42.70. The 31-year-old actress tops the list thanks in large part to "Black Swan," which earned over $300 million while costing only around $13 million.
Coming in second is "Twilight" actress Kristen Stewart, who earned her bosses $40.60 for every dollar she was paid. Forbes reports that she also topped their list of highest-paid actresses.
After ranking first on Forbes' list in 2009 and 2010, "Transformers" star Shia LaBeouf follows Portman and Stewart with a respectable return of $35.80 for every buck he takes home.
Kristen Stewart's "Twilight" co-star Robert Pattinson ranks fourth, taking in $31.70 for every dollar he earns. He would've ranked higher — according to Forbes — had his 2011 film "Water For Elephants" taken in more at the box office.
With the "Harry Potter" franchise being an international hit with moviegoers, it's no wonder that Radcliffe made the list. He reportely earns the movie studios $30.50 for every dollar he makes.
