AP

It’s a return to Middle Earth, Gandalf the Grey and of course … Hobbits.  If you have no idea what I’m talking about, then for you, the “Hobbit” really will be an “Unexpected Journey."

This prequel to “The Lord of the Rings” franchise takes you back to The Shire, home of the hobbits and Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman). The journey begins with Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and dwarf king Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) recruiting Bilbo to join a quest to reclaim The Lonely Mountain; former home to the dwarves, taken over by the dragon Smaug.

Let’s talk acting. McKellen, reprising his role as The Grey Wizard is excellent as usual. As for everyone else … good, but nothing great. They do reprise a few roles from the original “Rings” trilogy, but since I’m not about spoilers, you’ll have to see for yourself.

The Date Nighter Says: This really all depends on you and your date. If you are both HUGE fans of the franchise, then definitely go for it. Geeking out on goblins and magic can be just as romantic as a candle lit dinner … right?

Now, if it’s just YOU who's a fan, forget it.  This is not the kind of movie you want to surprise your date with because you may not have another.
