When you're young and in love, marriage seems like the next logical step. But love doesn't always last forever, and that's a lesson many people often learn the hard way — celebrities included.

Several big-name actors, actresses and musicians have notable (and sometimes little-known) early marriages under their belts. Whether they rushed into things or simply grew apart from their partners over the years, these celebrities couldn't make it work with their first spouses.

Have a look below to see who was originally married to whom.

Angelina Jolie

After meeting on the set of the 1995 film "Hackers," co-stars Angelina Jolie and Johnny Lee Miller ("Trainspotting," CBS's "Elementary") struck up a romance. They eventually married in 1996 (for the ceremony, Jolie wore a white shirt with Miller's name written across the back in her own blood), but divorced three years.

George Clooney

From 1989 to 1993, legendary bachelor George Clooney was married to actress Talia Balsam. The details of their divorce are unclear, but Clooney vowed never to marry again, at least according to a $100,000 bet he made with Michelle Pfeiffer. Balsam has since married "Mad Men" actor John Slattery.

Bradley Cooper

Bradley Cooper, the star of such films as "The Hangover" and "Limitless," was married to "Spin City" actress Jennifer Esposito in December of 2006. Esposito filed for divorce only months later in 2007, although a representative for Cooper stated that the decision to split was mutual.

Tom Cruise

Before he was married to (and divorced from) Katie Holmes and Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise called actress Mimi Rogers his wife. They divorced in 1990 after three years of marriage, but not before Rogers reportedly introduced Cruise to the Church of Scientology.

Sean Penn and Madonna

Sean Penn met Madonna in 1985. Penn's drinking and physical abuse ultimately led to their divorce in 1989, but both he and Madonna would eventually get married again: he to actress Robin Wright (from 1996–2010), and she to director Guy Richie (from 2000–2008).

Britney Spears

The document above is an Affadavit for Application for Marriage License, filed by Britney Spears and her childhood friend Jason Allen Alexander. The two wed in Las Vegas in the wee hours of the morning on January 4, 2004, but their marriage was annulled only 55 hours later. As the annulment petition read, “Plaintiff Spears lacked understanding of her actions to the extent that she was incapable of agreeing to the marriage."

Kim Kardashian

Before her short-lived marriage to basketball player Kris Humphries, Kim Kardashian was married to music producer Damon Thomas. The two eloped in 2000 when she was just 19, and their marriage lasted for almost four years before they divorced in 2004. Kardashian would later reveal that physical abuse and Thomas' controlling nature led to the dissolution of their union.

Jennifer Garner

Jennifer Garner met "Felicity" actor Scott Foley when she worked on the show in 1998. They married in 2000, but divorced in 2004 citing irreconcilable differences. Rumors circulated that her "Alias" co-star (and later boyfriend) Michael Vartan had something to do with the split, but Foley has denied that was the case. "People get divorced, you know? Through no one's fault and everyone's fault," he told TV Guide.

Uma Thurman

Uma Thurman ("Kill Bill," "Pulp Fiction") and English actor Gary Oldman ("The Dark Knight," "The Fifth Element") were husband and wife for two years in the early '90s. It was Thurman's first marriage, but Oldman's second (of four).

Alec Baldwin

Oddly enough, Alec Baldwin met his first wife, actress Kim Basinger, on the set of "The Marrying Man" in 1990, and the two wed in 1993. It was his first marriage and her second. The couple would later separate in 2000 and ultimately divorce in 2002. Basinger has never remarried, though Baldwin recently tied the knot with yoga instructor Hilaria Thomas.
